ENRIQUE DE MARCHENA KALUCHE ASSUMES PRESIDENCY OF CHA, PLANS TO RAISE AWARENESS, FOCUS ON HUMAN RESOURCES

Praises Past Presidents, Intends to Reinvigorate Board, National Hotel Associations

WASHINGTON D.C. (June 23, 2008) – Enrique De Marchena Kaluche, from the Dominican Republic, has become President of the Caribbean Hotel Association for 2008-2010 with a platform that includes goals to raise the level of awareness and respect for the hospitality and tourism industry by collaborating with governments and the people of the Caribbean, focusing on human resource development of Caribbean nationals working in both hospitality and tourism, improving the marketing of the hotel industry throughout the region, dealing with the impact of airline service cutbacks, integrating tourism into the economic chain on the islands, and reinvigorating both the Board of Directors and the national hotel association executives across the Caribbean.

De Marchena took the stage and the presidency of the Caribbean Hotel Association (CHA) praising the past presidents of CHA vowing “to listen to my constituents and get the best advice possible from the past presidents based on their own experience, their knowledge of the history of this association and the tourism sector in the Caribbean.”

De Marchena is creating a Council of Past Presidents of CHA to meet twice a year “to assist me to make this association stronger, because together we can.”

He acknowledges that “the 21st Century brings new challenges for the world, the Caribbean, and tourism in the Caribbean.  “I have always addressed challenges as opportunities, De Marchena said, adding:  “The first challenge will be the integration of the private sector for the success of the tourism industry in the Caribbean. At CHA we are going to address this issue and thereby ensure that CHA maintains its position as the leading private sector tourism institution in the Caribbean.”

His goal is to continue to set the tone, to raise the awareness level and critical role that the entire hotel and tourism industry contributes to the economy of the Caribbean and also tourism’s role as the major provider of jobs and the alleviation of poverty.

Antigua and Barbuda intensifies promotions in Atlanta

2006-12-06 15:33:03

In an effort to commence the tourist season on strong footing, the US Tourism team conducted a road show throughout Atlanta, GA. The team comprising US Director of Tourism, Derede Samuel-Whitlock, Neil Forrester, Executive Director of the Antigua Hotels and Tourism Association (AHTA) and representatives from Elite Islands Resorts, Jolly Beach, Curtain Bluff and Sandals made presentations at a destination sponsored breakfast and dinner last Thursday. On Friday, the group broke into two teams and made sales calls at the top travel agencies throughout Atlanta. The team was joined by representatives from tour operators Delta Vacations, GoGo Vacations, Vacation Express and Classic Vacations.

"One of the main goals of this promotional initiative is to broaden awareness in this region about the non-stop service from Atlanta to Antigua and Barbuda on Delta Airlines that makes travel to the destination easy and convenient. Delta Airlines began non-stop service from Atlanta to Antigua a year ago and the destination has seen steady growth in South East region of the United States which over the years accounted for less than 20% of the US visitor arrivals," said Derede Samuel-Whitlock.

Delta offers connecting service from many major gateways throughout the United States via their Atlanta hub. This service has increased visitors’ access to Antigua and Barbuda from many cities throughout the North America, with significant increases in air arrivals from Toronto and Los Angeles, the two top feeder cities for the Delta service to the destination.

Antigua and Barbuda was among 50 new international routes added to the Delta network in the last 12 months. Delta is America's fastest growing international airline offering flights to 461 worldwide destinations in 96 countries, including cricket countries such as India, South Africa and Australia. The Ministry of Tourism anticipates that Delta’s international network will be seen as a travel option by cricket fans who visit the region for the ICC games in 2007.
