Welcome to the first Newsletter of the Antigua Hotels & Tourist Association for 2009.
Concession given under the
Emergency Economic Plan

The Emergency Economic Plan that was signed between the Government and the A.H.T.A. made provisions for the reduction of electricity and diesel fuel costs for the hotels. These are now in place and hotels should be benefitting from them.

As of November 1st 2008 hotels have benefited from a 15% discount on their electricity bills on the condition that the invoiced amount is paid within 30 days. There has been some confusion over the application of this discount as APUA is experiencing technical problems with their accounting software. However hotels should manually deduct 15% from the monthly consumption and pay the net amount to APUA. We have been assured by the General Manager of APUA, Mr Esworth Martin that the discounted amounts will be amended on future billings.

The EEP also made provision for the sale of duty free diesel fuel to hotels. As of January 9th, 2009 West Indies Oil Co will be providing the hotels of the AHTA with duty free diesel fuel for their generators. This will represent a reduction in the fuel cost of approximately 25%.

Regular meetings are held between the Association, the Government  and the other stakeholders to review the state of the industry. Hoteliers will be meeting with Minister Lovell this week to discuss other possible ways in which the Government can help the industry traverse this crisis.

CaribCert Update

The AHTA has a mission to have all 5,000 of our industry workers certified by the year 2011. As an advocate for professional development our role is to develop our human resource to an international standard, and one such programme that can facilitate our aim is CARIBCERT.

CARIBCERT is a skill and knowledge development and professional recognition program that is designed to be started and completed on the job. It is not a training program nor does it require schooling outside the business. This new certification program will provide a way for all tourism employees to show that they meet and exceed the standards for the industry.

We re-introduced this program in 2007 to our member hotels and associates, and to date 47 persons have registered from respective properties: Jolly Beach Resort, Sandals, Galley Bay, Tradewinds Hotel, Hermitage Hotel, Antigua Yacht Club Marina and The Water Front Restaurant. Nineteen persons have completed the two phase model of the programme (theory and practical), and sat the exam between the months of June 08 – Dec 08 in the following areas: Food & Beverage, Food Preparation Supervisor, Front Desk Agents, Beverage Service, Core Supervisory/Management, Cook and Room Attendant

Our overall success rate in passes is 97% and the feed-back from the candidates and their Human Resource department has been very positive.

As of 2009, persons registered with CARIBCERT can sit the exam in the months of: March, June, September and December. For information on CARIBCERT, please visit www.caribcert.com  or contact Anthea Watkins at anthea@antiguahotels.org.
 CrimeStoppers goes mobile

CrimeStoppers Antigua was presented this month with its first vehicle at Police Headquarters. The van which is covered in CrimeStoppers decals will be used to advertise CrimeStoppers and the 800 TIPS (8477) number to all the communities in Antigua and Barbuda.
“What we are trying to do is let the general public know about us, as they are the ones who take the lead in all of this.” said CrimeStoppers co-ordinator Sergeant Lawrence Clarke.
The van will help Clarke who will be targeting schools, youth groups and churches. He has recently been given permission by the Ministry of Education to start a schools awareness programme.  Clark said “What I am trying to do is to get young people to understand that we are part of a community and what goes on round the community affects all of us. So if there is a little group in the community that is making it bad for everybody, they should not condone it but speak out against it. One of the ways that they can speak out is by calling Crime Stoppers and we in turn can pass the information to another relevant agency.”
CrimeStoppers Antigua was set up in November 2008 as an initiative to tackle the growing crime rate in Antigua and Barbuda. CrimeStoppers allows individuals to assist the Police in criminal investigations by offering tips and crime information anonymously.

Hermitage Bay is the 2009 Grand Award Winner in Andrew Harper's Hideaway Report

Hermitage Bay is a 2009 Grand Award Winner in Andrew Harper’s Hideaway Report, and is featured in their January 2009 Special Edition. Hermitage Bay is the only hotel listed from the Caribbean Region.

Andrew Harper's Hideaway Report is the ultimate travel guide for sophisticated travelers seeking candid reviews and inside information on the best luxury hotels, resorts and hideaways in the United States and around the world. The newsletter recognises only the top hotels and resorts around the world. Andrew Harper travels anonymously, accepts no advertising and pays his own way, making the Report the most credible source of information for the luxury traveler. People pay to be members and are affluent and sophisticated travelers looking for special places to stay.

Each year the Report recalls travel experiences over the past 12 months and singles out a number of particularly enchanting hotels and resorts for special recognition. To be considered for their annual awards, properties must be relatively small in size and possess strong individual personalities. They are also required to have relaxing atmospheres and to demonstrate a consistent devotion to personal service. The Report relies on decades of experience and that intangible summary impression that separates the good from the truly enchanting. All winners offer the traveller comfort, warmth and charm, as well as a spirit of sincere hospitality.

The Report states that “Overall, Hermitage Bay struck us as a distinguished addition to the Caribbean scene”.
Hermitage Bay is also featured this month in:
The Tatler 2009 Travel Guide, which lists the 101 best hotels in the world.
