TASTE of the Caribbean |
|
|
The Antiguan team that took part in the Taste of the Caribbean international culinary competition returned home last week from San Juan with silver medals and great satisfaction with their accomplishments.
Verman Banhan, the team manager said, "It was a wonderful experience. We had difficulty getting there in the first place, started out only four weeks before the competition to get a team ready and get there. It was difficult, but the guys were super; they worked together very well." Banhan supported his claim by explaining that the team was able to come out with a silver medal out of a group of 13 teams.
Even though the Antiguan team only had around four weeks to prepare, it still came out with more points than most of the other teams, he added. Most of the other teams had been practicing for months. The biggest problem faced by the team, Banhan noted, was financing to pay for rooms, uniforms, equipment and passage. They were assisted, however, by Julian Waterer of Chefs World, who he referred to as a "mentor", who donated their uniforms so that they would be able to go to the competition. The team also received assistance from Horizons, Island Provisions, TCM and Antigua Distillery.

The team consisted of Verman Banhan, executive chef at Hermitage Bay, Executive Chef Graham Singer and Executive Sous Chef Charlesworth Jeremy of the Blue Waters Hotel, Andie Henry, sous chef at Sandals Grand Antigua, Marika Nurse Anthony, sous chef at Carlisle Bay, Pastry Chef Dagobert Arrizza also from Sandals and Tajah Philip, head bartender at Hermitage Bay.
For the competition, each team had to prepare a three-course dinner using 20 ingredients from the pantry, a number of mystery ingredients and four ingredients indigenous to each country. They were given four hours to do so.

ABTA hosts media luncheon in Toronto |
Antigua & Barbuda hosted a meet and greet luncheon to introduce their new CEO, Colin James, of the Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority. It was James’ first trip to Canada since the creation of the Tourism Authority in February 2009.
Last Wednesday's event was hosted at Pangaea restaurant in Toronto, the group having returned from Western Canada to host similar functions. The Antigua & Barbuda delegation included Neil Forester, General Manager of the Antigua Hotels & Tourist Association (AHTA) and Erica Henry-Jackson, Sales and Marketing Manager of the Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Office and Consulate General of Antigua & Barbuda in Toronto.
James said it was his mission to travel to Canada and meet firsthand with the journalists and travel industry partners that work hard alongside him to convince Canadians that Antigua & Barbuda is a desirable destination. He acknowledged the major hurdle is working on airlift; easier access and increased access is what will give the country’s tourism a boost, and lobbying for increased air is one of the organization’s main goals.
Some additional strategies the Tourism Authority is taking include creating more of an online presence, in order to help potential visitors do their initial research online, and getting involved in social media. Antigua & Barbuda is now on Twitter, Facebook, and other social networking sites. |
