CARICOM Heads Of Government Meeting in Antigua

This newsletter goes out as Caribbean Heads of Government are meeting at the Jolly Beach Resort.

On Tuesday evening the Opening Ceremony of the 29th Meeting of the Caricom Heads of Government took place in the Admiral Lord Nelson's Ballroom at the Sandals Grande Antigua Resort.

Amid much ceremony the audience was addressed by H.E. Edwin Carrington, Secretary General of Caricom, Hon Bruce Golding, the Prime Minister of Jamaica, H.E. Bharrat Jagdeo, President of the Republic of Guyana and the Hon Winston Baldwin Spencer, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda and Chairman of the Meeting.

For the first time tourism appears as an agenda item at the Caricom Heads of Government meeting. On Wednesday a whole day was dedicated by the Heads of Government to discuss the problems facing tourism. Also in attendance was the new President of CHA Enrique Demarchena, CEO Alec Sanguinetti and CHA European Advisor David Jessop.

After a day of much deliberation the CARICOM Heads agreed in principle to a regional marketing campaign and to the use of the Caribbean brand (see logo above) to be used in all promotional initiatives both nation and regional. The Caribbean Tourism Development Company was established as a joint venture by CTO and CHA for this purpose and will oversee all regional marketing initiatives. However although a provisional budget of US$60 million was proposed the funding of this venture is still a challenge. The Heads have mandated a COTED meeting on tourism to find a sustainable solution to provide the funding and report back to a bureau of Heads of CARICOM within 60 days.

There was also much discussion on the problems facing the regional airlines. Individual islands were urged to look at ways of reducing taxes on regional air travel in order to stimulate increased traffic especially during the coming fall months when numbers are expected to drop.

Both the CEOs of LIAT and Caribbean Airlines were present and have agreed to explore together interline exchanges between the two airlines.

CARICOM also agreed to adopt a common set of national accounts using a Tourism Satellite Accounting system and has proposed to investigate a proposal from the WTTC.

The Heads of Government also recommended that a task force be set up to explore the linkages between agriculture and tourism.

Monthly Luncheon - Thursday 10th July

The next of our series of monthly luncheons will take place on Thursday July 10th at the Cove Restaurant at Blue Waters at 12.00pm

The invited speaker will be Police Commissioner Gary Nelson who will update us on the progress the Police Force has made since his arrival.

This meeting is open to all AHTA members and guests. A cover charge of EC$100.00 will be payable at the door.
MARKETING ON THE RUN

Marketing Intelligence

Chapter 2 of the story of how the Internet will impact the practice of marketing in the travel industry is about to be written, and one of the headlines will undoubtedly herald the arrival of "mobility marketing."
As of this writing, there are approximately 229 million cell phones in use in the United States, of which an estimated 14% are Internet enabled. The latter number is expected to grow exponentially in the months ahead as a result of stepped-up distribution of "3G" phones and more aggressive marketing by wireless service providers to bundle and sell additional services to consumers who appear to have an insatiable appetite for more information.

And there's no question mobility will soon "rule" as the preferred method of communication, as demonstrated by the remarkable transformation of the manner in which consumers now wire their primary residences: fully 16% of households in the U.S. have a cell phone but no land line versus just 6% four years ago. And among households headed by individuals between 25 and 29 years of age, fully 35% now have only a cell phone.

The implications of this remarkable evolution of the manner in which we now communicate are explored in-depth in our new "NEXTGEN Traveler™" survey which we co-authored with PhoCusWright. Based on a national sample of approximately 2,500 active "next generation" travelers who are also "users of technology," the results are provocative. Selected highlights are provided below:
68% like traveling to new places and experiencing new things; 75% would travel more if they had more money (62% would do so if they had more time);
Two-thirds (65%) take pictures with their cell phones,
29% play video games and 22% follow news/sports/stocks;
56% regularly visit myspace.com (34% visit youtube.com);
One-third (33%) access the Internet via their cell phone;
Over half (56%) have taken a virtual tour of a hotel or resort online; Almost four out of ten (38%) have built trip itineraries online;
And fully one-third (33%) have written and posted a travel review online.
And although less than 10% of these NEXTGEN travelers have actually made an airline, hotel or car rental reservation using their Internet-enabled cell phone (other than through voice communications), fully one-quarter expect to do so during the next two years.

So buckle up!
