National Solidarity March and Memorial Service

NGO’s, Unions, Government, Political Parties unite towards one goal – Stop the Violence

Hundreds of people turned out last Thursday for a spirited peace march and rally against the upsurge in crime and violence.

NGOs,union representatives,Government officials, members of Political Parties and the private sector all came together to show their solidarity. Wearing black armbands they marched through the streets of St John's.

The March began at the Holy Family Cathedral on Michael's Mount and proceeded down Vivian Richards Street, along Market Street and then back up High Street to finish at the Rising Sun Grounds where a memorial service was held to pay tribute to the victims of the recent crime wave.

The service led by Dean Smithen started with songs of praise by a group from the St John's Pentecostal Church. After scriptures read by the Hon. Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer and M.P. Gaston Brown, the Commissioner of Police Gary Nelson reassured residents of Antigua and Barbuda that a new task force was actively engaged in fighting crime. He also put out a call for help, requesting that anyone with information come forward and share it with the Police Force so that those behind these incidents be brought to justice.

National hero Sir Vivian Richards called on the nation to come together and find ways to help with solving the crime situation while calling on everyone to become more vigilant.

Miss AHTA Pageant

The Antigua Hotels and Tourist Association is pleased to announce the hosting of its inaugural Miss Antigua Hotels and Tourist Association, to be held on Saturday, 11th October 2008 at the Multi-Purpose Centre Perry Bay. Her objective will be to sell Antigua and Barbuda at all times; not only at overseas competitions but at conferences, seminars workshops.

The Pageant will feature five key segments, "Meet and Greet the People", "Fun in the Sun", "Showtime", "Enchanting Evenings" and Interview. The segments are specially designed to depict different aspects of Antigua’s Tourism Industry.

The pageant is opened to all employees of Members of the Antigua Hotels and Tourist Association who are between the ages of 18-35, who have good public speaking skills backed by a pleasant persona. The pageant offers opportunities for married and single women as well as women with children.

Safety and Security Task Force to inspect hotels

In light of the recent incidents that have rocked the island we need to reassure our visitors that Antigua is still a safe destination. To this end the Ministry of Tourism is putting together a task force to inspect all hotel properties on the island. The task force under the leadership of Captain Pennyfeather of the ABDF will look at all aspects of health and safety including food safety ( HAACCP), fire, safety procedures (hurricane plans), hotel plant, external security and produce a report and recommendations for each property.

The task force will as well as the Antigua & Barbuda Defense Force comprise members of the Fire Department, CBH, NODS & the AHTA. Much of this audit will be based on the FTO (Federation of Tour Operators) guidelines, copies of which can be obtained from the AHTA office)

It is hoped to train three Task Force teams this week so that audits may start next week. The teams will be contacting hotels to make arrangements to schedule a visit to each property. Please make every effort to facilitate these audits.
